DIDACTIC PROPOSAL

1. Title Talking about the past: A short history of space exploration
2. Information about the author. Isabel Pérez García (iperez@edu.xunta.gal) Especialista en Inglés en EI e Primaria.
3. Justification This proposal tries to use an engaging topic as it is space and how we have explored it over the years to to get the pupils learn and use the simple past in a meaningful context. At the same time English is the means to learn about space. It is supposed to be a double way process: using the contents to learn the language and viceversa.

6. Timeline 9 sessions approximately.
7. Key competences

8. Objectives- 

Practice using the simple past tense to talk about past events.
Learn vocabulary related to space exploration.                                                                Develop reading comprehension.
Develop listening comprehension skills.
Enhance speaking and writing skills.
Cultural Objectives: Learn about the evolution of human knowledge. Learn about life in the past. Learn about the evolution of the role of women in science. 

9. Contents

Vocabulary: Space-related vocabulary (e.g., astronaut, rocket, planet, satellite, mission, telescope, orbit, space station, etc.)
Simple past tense verbs (e.g., went, saw, landed, discovered, explored, worked, used, etc.)
Grammar: Simple past tense: regular and irregular verbs. Superlative adjectives (review)
Texts: A text about space exploration. A short text about the space race. A text about how the planets were named. A text about The astronaut Peggy Whitson.
A song about the planets.
Videos: A video about Yuri Gagarin's historic space flight. A video about the Apolo 11 mission and the moon landing. A video about daily life in the ISS.                                  Games and online quizzes.

10. Transversal elements

Science: Understanding the solar system, space exploration, and scientific discoveries.
History: Learning about classical culture and significant moment in space exploration.
Technology: Exploring the technology used in space missions (Artificial satellites, robots, spaceships, rockets, space station...)
Values: Critical thinking, equality among men and women.

11. Assessment criteria and instruments

Criteria:

Accurate use of the simple past tense in speaking and writing activities.
Appropriate use of space-related vocabulary.
Participation: Active participation in class activities (individually and team and whole class activities)
Willingness to share ideas and opinions.
Creativity and originality. Reading and speaking comprehension of a short text related to the  topic.

Assessment instruments: 

- Observation rubric including the above mentioned aspects.

- Test to evaluate the reading, writing and listening.
